The pianos of St Pancras

When I went to Paris for Work, a month and a half ago or so, I saw at St Pancras International these pianos, available to the public of travellers to play on. I love train stations and trains on any day, even if it is to travel to a city for work, knowing that the journey will be long but the stay short, therefore the whole venture exhausting. In a nices comfortable station, waiting to take the train is often the most pleasant part of the journey. Which is not quite the case of St. Pancras: I could barely find a place to sit until I got through customs. But it has nice eating places and a decent bookshop. And now, and more especially, these pianos, that just improved the whole experience. The station becomes an improvised concert hall. This man at your left played, not perfectly but this was part of the charm, the Rondo Alla Turca of Mozart. It was a lovely moment. If ever reads this, I want to thank him. And as to give you a token of the experience, I have uploaded here Alla Turca. It was also about time to have some Mozart on this blog.

Arvida seen from Italy

I blogged two years ago about a terrestrial globe in my Italian friend's family home in Bergamo. Well, she was kind enough to take pictures of the globe at my request. You can see one of it on your left. You can see Quebec of course, but if you look carefully you will notice what struck me about it. You will find it in the area of my region of Saguenay: the town (now borough) of Arvida is named on it as its center. Not Chicoutimi, the main city at the time (and still now, even though it has been renamed). This image is one of my most vivid memories of my friend's place. It can be explained for two reasons: 1)the globe is very old, according to my friend. 2)Arvida was at a time an important industrial town, because of its aluminum factory. It must have been considered a place worthy of mention on a globe, from an Italian's perspective. And Arvida does sound Italian. My mother comes from Arvida, so I have a special fondness for the place. And I find it funny that my friend and her family saw the name of the town over and over again when she was looking at the globe, probably never noticing it, but still there.

The return of the Bristol crocodile

The title of this post sounds very much like the title of a B movie. It may become one some day. Anyway, I blogged before about this urban legend when it first appeared in February this year. There had been sightings of a crocodile in Bristol. Well, England is full of legendary beasts and not so long ago, and even now, people believed that the countryside was full of unknown beasts. Anyway, the Bristol crock has been sighted again, and this time someone took a few snapshots... that don't show much. I am still very skeptical about it, as I was then. Four months down the line, the crocodile managed to remain off the radar and out of sight? I find it difficult to believe, especially in this day and age, when you can take pictures and videos so easily. I mean a video showing more than what looks like a log. Nevertheless, I find it a fascinating urban legend and new chapter of English cryptozoology. But until there is more evidence, I will remain skeptical. It can always become the inspiration for a good fictitious story.

The single gunshot that set the world ablaze

I thought about blogging the post at the exact time it happened, but I am not even sure we know of the exact time. Anyway, today is/was a very special anniversary, as a friend of Facebook reminded me by posting this article on his Wall: the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The gunshot that literally started World War 1, that set the whole world on fire. Of course there were a lot of tensions and factors that truly lead to the war, but this was nevertheless the spark that started it all. And I find it very ironic.

Manger grec

Sean Bean as Benny Griessel?

I have recently finished Thirteen Hours by Deon Meyer, maybe the most famous South African crime writer and one of my favorite crime writers. And I learned on the author's website that Sean Bean, famous for, well, many roles in many blockbuster movies and TV series which are so numerous I will not name, is in talk/rumored to play Benny Griessel, the recovering alcoholic cop who is the main character of the book, in a movie adaptation. I even read an old article from 2012 that he should actually star in the whole "Devil's Peak trilogy". Now I am a big fan of Sean Bean, because of those many movies and TV series which I will not list, so I would be over the moon if the project gets through. He would be perfect to play Benny Griessel. He has the physique and he has played before broken men and very convincingly. It would be even better if he can get the South African accent. The adaptations seem to be stuck in development hell, but if they ever get out of there... Well, I'll be very happy.

Anarchy in the UK

You have probably seen it before, I have seen it a dozen times, especially but not exclusively on Facebook, but it always has the same effect on me: I still find it hilarious. Sadly, anarchy is now very common in the United Kingdom, ad tea is drunk less and less, in favour of coffee. But the Brits were never foreign to lawlessness and downright barbarism when it came tea: they drink it with milk. Which I find extremely offensive. So whether tea is popular anymore or not, anarchy has always been rampant in this country.

The perfume of cigars

I went to a pub last weekend, had a beer in the beer garden. I don't always go to beer gardens, because it is usually a place where smoking is allowed, but I went anyway because it was a big beer garden so I could avoid the smoke. Nasty, filthy, stinky cigarettes smoke. So I was enjoying a beer in the shade when I smell something else. There was a big burly British man smoking a huge cigar, one of those the size of a club that looked like the stuff you see stuck between Churchill's jaws on old pictures. And it smelled absolutely lovely. I don't know why, and it is a confession I have to make: although I hate cigarets, although I find smoking the nastiest and stupidest habit, cigars just smell so darn nice. Maybe it is because my dad used to smoke them, and does still sometimes. I am used to its perfume since childhood. In any case, I can't help it: it just smells nice.

The skeleton of a Smilodon

I am writing another post about a feline, but this one is sadly extinct. This (very bad) picture was taken at the Natural History Museum. It is of course the skeleton of a smilodon, the most famous saber-toothed cat. One of the museum's big attractions, it seems. The look is quite striking and even with only a skeleton the Smilodon is terrifying. Actually, he may look even scarier with only his skeleton on. You see his carnivorous teeth better and you could think he could jump, break through the glass and tear you apart with his fangs. I love all sorts of cats, big and small, and I love the predatory part of their nature (as I mentioned here). And you cannot have a more perfect predator than a Smilodon. Sadly, in the long road through life on Earth that is evolution, this big fella got lost. Which reminds me that however impressive a feline is, in the end he remains vulnerable, and might end up like this, a skeleton in a museum. So not only do I find the remains of this Smilodon impressive, I also find them tragic.

Return to Miss Montreal

I have blogged before about Miss Montreal, merely saying that I had purchased it, so happy to find a crime novel set in Montreal, by a Montreal born writer. Well, I am blogging about it again tonight, because 1)I finally read it (within a week actually) and 2)the story is set around/during the Fête Nationale, i.e. today.I will not write here a complete review, merely gave me some impressions. It was most definitely a pleasant read. Heck, I read it in a week, it was a good read. Nasty, violent, and set in my city, which is vividly depicted. To the homesick Quebecker, this novel is a blessing.

It has flaws, however: sometimes Montreal is too much like the one you see on postcards (the smoked meat joint is visited, the bagels joint is visited, the locals are sometimes a bit too typical), so it sometimes gives the city a certain exoticism that I don't recognize. That said, this may be due to the nature of the relationship between Shrier's characters and Montreal: they are visitors, not locals, and thus see the city as something foreign and exotic, at least in part. And I fall in the same trap myself when I talk of my city, to friends here or on this very blog. More importantly, there are a few downright implausible elements in Miss Montreal: I can buy that a far right, anti-Muslims party is founded by a member of the élite turned fascist, but not that it has its offices on the Plateau Mont-Royal, where a large population of North African immigration lives. I mean, back in the 2003 elections, Mario Dumont had its campaign posters vandalized with swastikas on his forehead and Hitler's mustache. And now the Plateau has elected and re-elected an MP of Iranian origins to represent them at the National Assembly. So a far-right party in Montreal? Maybe, but certainly not on the Plateau. I find it even far less plausible that the same party leader, would give a speech at the end of the Saint-Jean's concert, at the invitation of an artist who shared his views. It just simply wouldn't happen. You'd need a far-right artist, which is an unknown species in Québec, at least in the mainstream. And even if there had been one, the thing would have been considered far too controversial, even poisonous. There is also something else, but if I was mentioning it it would spoil the novel for you. Let's say that like in many superhero comic books, when an important event that could dramatically change the life of the city and maybe the whole nation happens, everything goes back to normal a few days after, just in time for Canada Day.

Okay, I may sound too harsh now. I actually loved Miss Montreal, in spite and sometimes because of its flaws. It has great characters, a handful of villains and some nasty piece of urban violence. And it has Montreal, a character of its own. Sometimes looking a bit too much like a postcard, but still, there is authenticity even in postcards. For a summer read, especially around this time, I would heartily recommend it.

The Italian Connection

Oh how I wish I could be in Manchester sometimes! It would be a nice time for a pilgrimage there. Anyway, the Anthony Burgess Foundation and the Societa Dante Alighieri are exploring these days the connection between my favourite writer (Burgess, not Dante) and Italy. They will, among other things, talk about his friendship with Sophia Loren, who inspired the character of Beatrice Joanna in The Wanting Seed and also one hagiographic article in Homage to Qwert Yuiop. Burgess also lived in Italy for an extensive part of his adult life and  of course married an Italian, Liana, his second wife. And also, incidentally, someone I met personally. So Anthony Burgess had a very special relationship with Italy and Italian culture.

A relationship which in my own life, especially my youth (well, in my twenties), I semi-voluntarily tried to emulate. I made many Italian friends and acquaintances at university and later and tried to learn the language. I am still struggling with the latter, but thankfully I still have Italian friends, with whom I created strong bonds. I cannot visit Italy any time soon and beside I want to know the language more, enough to get by. Until then, a pilgrimage in Manchester at the ABF would calm my longing for Italy.

Encore Beau Dommage

Early Countdown to Halloween (?)

It vaguely crossed my mind yesterday, and October Farm reminded me of it in her most recent post, but once the summer solstice is passed, slowly, very slowly, the days will be getting shorter, until autumn starts showing up. Which means, in other words, that we can start the countdown to Halloween. In the middle of a summer that is looking to be quite hot, this may seem incongruous. But is is not. In folklore, witches's Sabbath were celebrated in different times of the year, including tomorrow. As a child, I used to start reading horror stories during summertime, mixed with more summery reads. Our make belief games during summer, don't ask me why, were often centered about haunted houses and castles. And of course, Halloween was always in my mind. Anyway, talking about haunted houses, there is one house in this town that keeps reminding me of Halloween: the one with the Jack O'Lanterns above the ground floor windows. I first blogged about it last August. Last Halloween I could see no sign of celebration there, but they don't need to, I guess. I am strongly suspecting that this is actually haunted. It looks quite spooky anyway, and I thought I would upload the last picture I took of it, to mark this early countdown to Halloween.

The solo of the helicopter

I witnessed another sign of summertime today: the flight and sound of many airplanes and one helicopter. They fly all year round of course, but they seem more... audible and visible during the summer season. I am not sure why, maybe it is because the windows are open all the time. I hear them more anyway. But the helicopter is the one I identify most with summertime. They look like metallic mosquitoes in the sky, big or small, and their steady, monotonous buzz always make me think of the summer afternoon by the swimming pool of my childhood. Chicoutimi was near a military airbase, there were plenty of them flying around. Helicopters are for me the one of the symbols of modernity, the machines used by badguys in James Bond and other action movies. I think about it every time I hear one.

Midsummer

I have learned rencently, on one of the internet forums I sometimes go to that we are or we are near Midsummer, which is more or less the equivalent of the Summer's solstice. Which means today. Or tonight. The longest day of the year. In Sweden, Midsummer's Day is celebrated on the 24th of June, but from what I understand around Scandinavia it is more or less from June 21st until the the 24th. It is celebrated with old rituals which roots are deep in Paganism. To commemorate Midsummer and in a way to kick start the season I thought I would upload a picture of the mystery play I saw in Visby, during the medieval festival there. A medieval mystery play, the longest day of the year, summer in full bloom, it is a fitting image.

Question existentielle (231)

Catherine's Café in Wallingford

It is the weekend, a lovely sunny Saturday, maybe not quite the cold day you would need to fully appreciate afternoon tea and cakes, then again unless it's a heatwave you can't go wrong with tea and cakes on a lovely Saturday. As it is a weekend tradition on this blog, I am plugging today a place to enjoy food and drink. This time, it is Catherine's Café in Wallingford, the quintessential English town. It is called a café, but it is just as much a tea room. It serves honest, home make cakes and it is warm and friendly. One of the cakes was a bit dry, but then we went there near closing time, and anyway it was a lovely experience. There is something about small cafés in the corner of a street. If you know about feng shui, tell me what your hypothesis is. In any case, this is a pretty little independent café in a world that has too little of them.

Football in a nutshell

The World Cup is going on right now, as every single person on the planet knows, whether they love football or not. I happen to dislike it, I find the sport boring, slow and I find that here in England it brings the worst of people. So I am glad to know that England is eliminated now, even though they have one game left. I said on Facebook and at work something that sums up football for me: "Football is also called soccer, because it sucks." I think it deserves to be a great unknown line. My brother PJ had a few great ones as well about football, I might put them one day here, however I want to blog about football/soccer only a little. I don't want to spend more time on it than necessary.

That said, I was happily surprised when I discovered that not everyone is a football fan in this country. My manager and the other colleague in my small team at work both dislike football and avoid it like the plague it is. It is always good to know. I have also seen at least one pub advertising itself as a "football free zone" in my town. So I am not alone. it is always good to know.

Long, long, longue journée, mais toujours une belle journée ensoleillée.

Liverpudlian (counter)culture

One of my Facebook friends put on her wall this silly internet article, 22 Things Only Students In Liverpool Will Understand. Well, I never was a Liverpool student, but I worked as a teacher in Liverpool and many if not most of my students were Scousers. So reading this silly article brought back some memories. Among them that I never quite got their accent, however charming I found it. Some of the vocabulary I never got either. Anyway, reading this, even though it is exaggerated and overall rather silly, really made me miss my time there. I do disagree with one thing: I am not certain the Beatles and their heavy heritage is as popular as the article seems to claim. And I have a confession to make: I don't remember the lambananas. Which is a darn shame, as I love that kind of quirky stuff. I guess I will need to revisit the city at some point.

The weight of Manhattan

Today, my manager was reading online about absurd questions that have been known to be asked at job interviews, and he came with one that he found particularly tricky: "What is the weight of Manhattan?" He had the answer on his screen and asked us what we thought. I gave him the right answer immediately, which flabbergasted him. The answer is below, I will let you think about the question and see if you can get it without reading further. My second paragraph has clues that will help you.

I didn't know the answer, I had not read it on the internet before (as my manager suspected at first), however I knew how to deduce it. You know how to do it? If you are a bit familiar with René Magritte, it should come to you easily. In my case, I immediately remembered my course of linguistics in cégep and Ferdinand de Saussure. If you have been reading this far, you have enough clues to find out. And you know that the answer is not found through geology, physics or mathematics. Have you given up yet? Found it? Well, here it is: Manhattan has no weight. See, Manhattan is a word and thus is weightless. Simple linguistic: a sign has no relationship other than an arbitrary one to the concept it represents. Words have no weight, size, form or existence in themselves. I have to say, I am quite proud of myself.

Question existentielle (230)

Sunset over Loxton

I have never been to Loxton, or indeed anywhere in South Africa. I discovered the town through Blood Safari, a crime novel of Deon Meyer. I blogged about it here. I am reading at the moment Thirteen Hours, so I thought about Loxton, even though the novel is not set there. I also remembered Meyer shot a movie in Loxton, and he had taken a lot of pictures and uploaded them on his Facebook page. A lot of beautiful pictures. So I shamelessly downloaded one to put here on Vraie Fiction. The most picturesque I could find. I don't like to share pictures I did not take myself (or at least a member of my family), but the town of Loxton has fascinated me since I started reading about it that I had decided to upload it. Its name is kind of banal, yet it looks so genuinely exotic, a small town in the middle of nowhere, at the edge of the world, on the other side of the world. So yes, I decided to upload this picture. In the end, it is a beautiful sunset.

Tigers and other predators

This picture was taken at the Natural History Museum, it is one of those old stuffed animals they have, depicted in a dramatic pause. Here, a tiger eagerly eating the fresh carcass of its prey, a deer I think (or some kind of cervid anyway). I love these stuffed animals, the fact that they date back from ages, more than a century sometimes adds to the charm.I have no idea where the tiger is from or if the depiction is authentic: can such deer exist in the wild in the same environment as a tiger, does the flowering sapling behind them come from the same area as either the tiger or the deer? I don't care, it is beautiful and so life like.

And I have something to confess: while I find the tiger terrifying, I can't help not finding this image cruel. Or rather, I accept the cruelty of predatorism. It is true of every predator of the animal kingdom, it is even more true of feline predators. Tigers, in the end, are merely big cats, and I love cats. They hunt, but they always eat the kill. Which tones down the cruelty of the action. In fact, in the tiger's mind, there is no true cruelty, just hunger. Of course, I would not befriend a tiger. I will reserve this to its smaller cousins. All the same, I look at this image and cannot help finding the tiger quite cute.

The fragrance of lavender

The evil witch I used to have as a downstairs neighbour and who worked very hard to poison my life is now gone. As I think I mentioned before, she was also the self-appointed gardener of this block and self-proclaimed regent of the darn place. So anyway she sold her house, left the place and left the garden as it is, unattended. So plants keep on growing, untended. I should be angry, but I don't care one bit. The witch is gone, I prefer an untended garden to one that is run by a crazy busybody. But I noticed something today: lavender growing in various patches by the building. And I love the smell of lavender. I associate it more with the South of France, especially Provence, something that they put in clothes so they can smell fresh. I love the smell of lavender, when it is real, fresh lavender. I am kind of tempted to use the lavender of the garden in the same fashion, put some on my clothes to have the fragrance on them. It's not like anyone will care anyway. The gardeners that come here are basically glorified lawnmowers and they were doing what the witch was telling them to do, which is very little. Now they'll keep on mowing the lawn and do very little else. And the plants are going to grow wild anyway, until (and unless) someone in the board of administrators decide to do anything. That said, I am maybe just as keen to let the lavender grow wild. I will enjoy its fragrance in the garden and remember that the evil witch is gone every time I smell it.

More storms

So far this summer, storm lovers like me have been very lucky. After a powerful one in late May that seemed to kick start the season, we had another one last week and more recently last night, between Friday the 13th and Saturday. Yesterday was a very special day, both Friday the 13th and a full moon. Sadly, I could not see much of the full moon, but instead I experienced a powerful storm, which was pure bliss. The lightnings were very close and thus the following sound of thunder was, well... Close. I hope we will keep on getting spoiled with more storms like this one. I find them soothing. And it cools down the temperature afterwards, so it is not so hot and sticky. But more importantly, storms are beautiful.

Black cats, full moon and Friday the 13th

This is not the best picture of Odin, but I had to upload a new one as it is Friday the 13th and it would not be Friday the 13th without a black cat. Sadly, Odin is no more with us in the flesh and his ashes are on the mantelpiece. But we have many pictures to remember him, including this one. It is a very special Friday the 13th today. Not because it is the only one of the year 2014, although that does make it special. But because it is also a full moon. Next time will be on August 13th, 2049. Full moons are the time of werewolves usually, but a black cat will do all the same, especially since I associated Odin with the full moon, what with his left eye that looked like one. And I understand the irony of showing a picture where you don't see it. See this picture for a better view of his lovely feline face. And happy Friday the 13th and full moon.

Un long calvaire.

The fish & chips craving satisfied

I had been craving fish and chips for a while, I finally gave in last Saturday. This is not from the usual fish and chips shop I buy it, but it is in the same town. The shop I used last time was further away (the one I go to usually is about five minutes form home), but I had been curious about it for a while. It is a much cleaner, but they don't pour quite enough malt vinegar on it. The meal is certainly salty enough though. So this is what I had for dinner last Saturday, it filled me up, clogged my arteries and more importantly satisfied my craving. Next time I will eat fish and chips, it will most likely be in Devon. Because I want to try near the sea, where the fish is daily fresh and at its best. It will be one of my holiday treats.

Summer days and weather

This picture is the one of the family's crapabble tree, I uploaded it here because it illustrates today's topic. Nothing looks more like starting summer than a tree in full bloom. So anyway, touch wood, it seems that summer is finally here. it is warm, sometimes even hot, always sunny, except in the evening when it rains. The weather is absolutely splendid. Yesterday at work, during one of my short breaks, I was saying this to a colleague, that the weather was splendid and then, being unable to say more on the subject he said: "Well, since we cannot complain anymore about the weather, we better find other topics of conversation." Because it illustrates how rare summer seems to be sometimes, how unlikely it is, I think it deserves to be a great unknown line. We do obsess a lot about it here. But hey, we have a summer. I am an autumnal person, but it is nice to have a summer to appreciate too. There were years when it never showed up.

Age, alcohol and a great unknown line

It was the birthday of my youngest brother on Sunday, he is now 33, the age of Christ as they say. It makes me feel quite old, knowing that my youngest brother is 33. Just ponder about it for a moment. Anyway, 33 is the kind of birthday one celebrates, and he did, so he came up with this on hos Facebook wall the next day: "At 33, I am feeling old. Although it may due to to alcohol." This is a new great unknown line and thus I wanted to share it.

20 minutes of Italian conversation

Yesterday, I had a drink with my Italian friend (the one who is my former colleague). Tired to hear me say my usual line, she offered me to spend fifteen minutes speaking Italian. Fifteen minutes that became twenty and were among the longest twenty minutes of my life. It was a frustrating, often humiliating experience. Basically, she asked me to tell her about my weekend in Italian. The problem is that I know little verbs, and none of them in the past tense. So I blabbered, stuttered and I hated it. And I hate hating to learn something I love. I am not sure it was a very useful 20 minutes: I learn a few extra words, but cannot remember the verbs at all, those verbs that made me stutter and struggle. So I feel like I may have wasted 20 minutes. The idea of spending time exclusively learning the language was a good one, not so much the organization. Moral of the story: I need to organize a better learning discipline. And I may need a less sarcastic teacher. Although for the latter that may be my pride talking.

A femme fatale

This is another painting from Fabian Perez, who is my favorite contemporary painter. its title is Tess IV, according to his website, which I find rather dry and impersonal. There is another one titled Saba with Glass of Red Wine, featuring the same model I think, if not the same character, but I prefer this one. In the Saba painting, she looks rather bored, in this one she seems to be enjoying her red wine very much. I would have titled it Femme Fatale. I would title most of Perez's painting featuring women Femme Fatale actually. He painted the archetype perfectly, its dark haired version at least. This is why I was making a distinction between the model and the character earlier: whoever is the model, whether her name is Saba or not, she is not this character, living a completely different life on the frame, an existence one of glamor and luxury, but not devoid of danger, maybe even a hint of tragedy.

Apart from my usual fascination for the work of Fabian Perez (even though I am a philistine when it comes to art), I am uploading this painting because it is one that accompanies the hot summer nights of drinking to come. It it is a beautiful summer day today, if a bit hot and sticky, I thought to bring a bit of glamor and exoticism to it. Perez is the painter of hot summer nights. I also love to read crime fiction and as I mentioned before I associate many of his paintings with crime fiction. If I could write a story for each one of them, it would be some hardboiled, even noir stuff. With plenty of femmes fatales to write about. Sadly, I did not see yet his new exhibition. Something to look forward to, if it is stoll going on.

Les copains des perrons aujourd'hui dispersés

"Je me fous du monde entier
Quand Frédéric me rappelle
Les amours de nos vingt ans
Nos chagrins, notre chez-soi
Sans oublier
Les copains des perrons
Aujourd'hui dispersés aux quatre vents
On n'était pas des poètes
Ni curés, ni malins
Mais papa nous aimait bien
Tu t'rappelles le dimanche ?
Autour d'la table,
Ça riait, discutait
Pendant qu'maman nous servait
"

The Detective Tales cover for June

This is again this time of the month when I upload a cover from Detective Tales and comment on it. I have chosen an odd one this time, from June 1936. I say odd one because it has a villain literally leashing out of a bookshelf, while the damsel in distress jumps away from him. The hero is gunning away at an unknown adversary, a common trope in pulp magazines, at least in Detective Tales. His shirt is teared apart on his left arm. What strikes me about the this cover is of course the mustachioed villain showing up like a jack-in-the-box from a hidden door/secret passage. Not so much how he looks like, he looks like a a stereotypical elegant villain, or what he is trying to do, grabbing the heroine (does he want to hold her to death?), but where he comes from, or rather what camouflaged the secret door. A bookshelf. Maybe I am reading too much into it, but I find it a nice little mise en abyme, evil jumping off the books.

Humour tilliesque

Rusted from the Rain

It has been stormy all morning today, with thunder and lightning and heavy rain. Which got me in the mood for stormy music. Stormy weather usually does. Here is Rusted from the Rain by Billy Talent. A rock song like I love them for your Saturday.

What's the matter Lagerboy?

Well, it is Friday, which means it is beer time, beer o'clock right now and I thought I would upload here what is maybe my favorite beer advert ever. This is of course for the flagship of Wychwood Brewery, the Hobgoblin. I have blogged about it a number of times and will do it again. I love the use of folklore for the beer's imagery, this sort of mascot that is the hobgoblin, here smiling mischievously, the tip of his nose reddening, offering the viewer a beer. And there's the motto, in your face: "What's the matter Lagerboy, afraid you might taste something?" Need I say more? That is my attitude towards the lager culture that has been plaguing England, in a nutshell.

The cry of the crow

This is another post about the wildlife at the train station. I took this picture about two weeks ago, when I was waiting for the train to go home. So I was waiting, being mildly bored, when I heard the distinctive cry of the crow. Unlike the last encounter with crows I blogged about, this was a single one, all alone. He cawing loudly, flying around, then settled for this tree just by the platform. And he kept cawing there. And that is all. I just love crows, love their attitude and I thought it was a good picture, so I uploaded it here tonight.

The fallen crown of Spain

Anybody in the mood for a controversial post? I did not have time to blog about it, but I wanted to. As you probably know already, King Juan Carlos of Spain abdicated. Because of a number of controversies and scandals, all very minor in comparison to the real scandal of monarchy: its existence now. His abdication may be one more nail in the coffin of this anachronistic, backward institution. In Spain anyway, where republicanism is actually shared by an important portion of the population. Spain is not my favorite country, but these days I envy them, or at least what is happening, because there may be a momentum for the monarchy to fall there. And if this happens, this may influence some other kingdoms, say the United one, to question their own crowned heads, to question, maybe even challenge, said crowned heads' legitimacy to the power they own and their relevance in a democracy (answer: they have none whatsoever). You have guessed that I am a staunch republican. And I know that this is far from the end, that the crown of Spain fell on the old king to get on the head of a new one. Nevertheless, reading these sort of news always give me a furious joy.

Mai 68

Rediscovering The Hound of the Baskervilles in Devon

My next holidays, and the first summer holidays I had in years (literally), will be in Devon, which I have never seen yet, but been wanting to see for quite a while. They are not until a little while, but I have already started preparing them. It means, apart from finding accommodations and places to visit (which the Devon has plenty of), finding books to read for the journey and my time there. It was easy for me: I bought The Hound of the Baskervilles in this bookshop. I choose the books I read according to seasons, I also choose them according to some settings. The novel being mainly set in Devon, I thought it was the perfect occasion to rediscover it. I had read the novel decades ago, in French, when I was still a child. It was not my first Sherlock Holmes story, but it was my first Sherlock Holmes novel. And such a great read too.

I am surprised I did not decide to rediscover it earlier. I guess because there are so many books to read, I forget there are so many books to reread. What I loved about it, apart from its atmosphere, was the elements of veiled supernatural, never becoming concrete of course: in the end, the old legend of the demonic hound is rationalized. Evil in old crime fiction, like in new crime fiction, is most definitely human in origins. Then again, the story is inspired about British folklore, the hellhound legends, very potent and evocative in itself. I am sometimes almost disappointed that Arthur Conan Doyle made a Sherlock Holmes adventure of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Keep the supernatural, take away Sherlock Holmes, and it could have made a brilliant horror novel. In a way, I will read it as a transitional novel, getting myself in the mood for horror stories while enjoying a great classic crime novel. In any case, it is a great atmospheric book and I cannot wait to read it where it is set.

Othello and me

Recently, I did another of those silly personality tests you find on Facebook, titled Which Shakespeare Character Are You. I was rather surprised at first, as I came up with Othello. When I think of Shakespeare's characters, he is not the one who comes to my mind first, at least not the character that I would identify with. In fact, in the play itself, I find Iago far more fascinating. If I was good enough an actor and could master the Iambic pentameter, I'd play Iago in a heartbeat. Then again, on second thought, and taking into account that it is a silly test, it sort of makes perfect sense. Granted, I would be a bit pale for Othello. Actually, I would be very pale. That said, if I am not a Moor, neither were any actor contemporary to Shakespeare. And like Othello, I am a foreigner, here in England, and I would still be a foreigner in Italy, if I was to live there. Shakespeare created his share of outsiders, but this particular outsider is more akin to me. And well, I may have my flaws, but overall I think I am a decent guy. I am certainly not twisted like Iago so, while I would play him with enthusiasm, I am far more like Othello. And I am cool with that.

Sunday Roast

It is Sunday, the last day of the weekend and I don't know if you are like me, but I often have the Sunday blues. Here is a way I suggest to fight it: eat a Sunday roast. Charming British tradition, which I love. It might be a bit hot for you this Sunday, depending of where you live, but this is the perfect meal if you feel melancholic, hungry and if you want to forget any prejudice you may have against English food, this is the meal for you.

That is, if you find the right place to eat it. And this leads me to the second intention of this post: to plug the item on the menu of a particular pub, to celebrate the weekend. Even though the weekend is ending, this is a new tradition on this blog. I took this picture and this particular roast at the Grouse & Ale in Lane End, an English village in Buckinghamshire . If you travel there, you better book in advance, because it is very popular (and rightly so). It is an old fashioned, old looking pub full of atmosphere and the food is delicious. I was lucky enough to have the last roast available that day. The potatoes were roasted in duck fat. I felt guilty until the last bite, but they were the best ones I had in ages. In fact, the whole roast was maybe the best Sunday roast I ever had in a pub. Usually there is at least one thing I like less, either some mash that tastes weird or the gravy is not the best. Now everything was simply perfect.

1er Juin
